The short answer
There is no single best place to stay in Koh Samui; it depends on the trip. If you want nightlife and everything on your doorstep, stay in Chaweng or Lamai on the busy east coast. If you want charm and dining without the crowds, Bophut and its Fisherman’s Village are lovely. And if you want calm days, a gently shelving, safe-swimming beach and the island’s best sunsets, the quiet north coast (Maenam, Bang Po and Choeng Mon) is the better fit. We’re on Bantai Beach at the quiet end of Maenam, so the guide below is honest about all of it.

A restored old-town strip of wooden shophouses, boutiques and restaurants right on the north coast, with a lively Friday walking street. Calm water and an easy, stylish evening scene without the crowds of Chaweng.

Busy, nightlife, central
The island's longest beach and its main hub, with the most bars, restaurants, shopping and nightlife, and a wide, popular stretch of sand. Lively day and night; the natural base if a buzzing scene is the point of the trip.

Lively but lower-key
Koh Samui's second-busiest beach, just south of Chaweng, with its own strip of bars and restaurants, a touch quieter, and a pretty curve of sand. A middle ground between Chaweng's energy and the calm north.

Quiet, scenic, off the radar
A tucked-away stretch of the north coast west of Maenam, known for calm water, fresh-seafood restaurants and big open sunsets. Few crowds and a slow, local feel, one of the quietest places to stay on the island.

Tranquil, family-friendly, near the airport
A sheltered cove on the north-east tip, minutes from the airport, with calm shallow water and a handful of restaurants. Quiet and easy, while still close to Chaweng for a night out.

Why we chose Maenam
Cape Beach Villa sits on Bantai Beach, the quiet end of the Maenam bay. The beach here is a calm, gently shelving, shallow, safe-swimming sandy beach where the water stays shallow a long way out, which makes it easy and reassuring for couples and families alike. Each evening the sun drops over the sea toward the islands of Ang Thong.
Every villa has its own private Jacuzzi, with one shared sea-view pool and a private stretch of this beach a few steps from the door.
